To Paint or Not to Paint ..................

Have you ever wanted something for a really long time, but you let your husband (or anyone) talk you out of it????  Well, I have wanted painted and glazed cabinets for about 15 years now. Yikes, I am getting old :) In that time we built 3 new houses and each time it was about resale value. You know, was it just a trend that would not be a good selling point. (Imagine that painted cabinets would keep someone from buying a house, Really?) Each kitchen was lovely in all of the houses and we never had a problem with resale.
However, the problem came when we moved into my grandparents' house and we remodeled the kitchen.  Again, I was persuaded to go with cherry cabinets because of the richness that it would add to 1970's ranch home.

Well, now 5 years later, I really wish I would have gone with my gut and ordered the glazed cabinets.  I have been wanting to paint them for about 3 years now, but my husband just was not keen on that idea.  I guess I kind of understand since they were new and well constructed cabinets after all, last year I even went and bought the supplies, but chickened out.

The way the light shines on them you can see any scuffs, dust, especially this drawer that is above the garbage can. It looks like I haven't cleaned them at all and I just washed them all down the other day. I am constantly wiping them down, especially this bottom row. It seems like all those crevices collect everything, Ugh?

So I am really contemplating painting them, with my husbands OK this time :)

What do you think?  Do you have another solution that may work? Any suggestions?

  1. Go for it!! I'm on a tear painting everything, and I am so happy I did. If you use homemade chalk paint, you won't have to prime or sand!

  3. Chrissy,
I was in the same dilemma. But we have not been here 15 years only six.We have maple cabinets with a cherry finish.I wanted white cabinets when we bought this. But I actually talked myself out of it because I thought it was just a trend and I went with darker cabinets thinking that they would not show dirt.Well I was wrong! Dark cabinets show just as much as lighter cabinets.I was always wiping finger prints everyday use marks off.I then decided I should have what I really wanted.I asked my husband if I could paint them.He was not happy about it at first but he let me do it.Now he is happy with it.I still may do a glaze them eventually.Right now I like the "White look".I used chalk paint because I thought it would be easier. But when it comes to painting cabinets nothing is easy.Take your time doing it.I started mine last spring. And this week I will finally finish when I paint my desk in my kitchen. One thing I wish I did not go for a "White" look I should have used old white.I love the color. And so far no problems (other than the island) with marks. But down the road I am not sure.Time will tell if my white will hold up to a antique white.Although if you glaze them that will be perfect.I did that look with my dining room table and I LOVE it!

  8. I will have painted cabinets when I get my house. If you do decide to keep the stained cabinets, you might try cleaning them with Murphy's oil soa[ and then restoring the shine with Liquid gold. It leaves them with a nice luster.
